Come watch a cast of federal, state, and local judges participate in a re-enactment of a major Asian American legal case! This year, APABA-DC will host the trial re-enactment of “Justice Denied: Wards Cove Packing Co. v. Atonio,” which describes how, in the 1970s, Filipino and native Alaskan activists led workers in Alaskan canneries to organize and file class actions against unfair and discriminatory working conditions that had prevailed for decades against Asian American cannery workers. After the decision, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1991, effectively amending Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, to counter the Supreme Court’s holding in Wards Cove Packing. The re-enactment is free and open to the public. A reception with light food and drinks will follow.
