Taiwan Indigenous Night

TAP-DC and TACL are proud to present: Taiwan Indigenous Culture Night!

Our guest speaker will be introducing basic information about Taiwan Indigenous Peoples. Attendees will also get to learn some Pangcah/’Amis Indigenous songs or daily dialogue, such as hello & goodbye, numbers, and more.

About the speaker: Margaret Yun-Pu Tu a.k.a. Nikal Kabala’an, Ph.D. Candidate in Law

Margaret is an international student from the Indigenous communities in Taiwan, Pangcah/’Amis and Sakizaya; also, the Hakka, the Hoklo, and the people who relocated to Taiwan from 1945-1949. She shared her story as a mix-blood Taiwanese in the Blue Marble Bash Student Speeches 2022 in Downtown Seattle.

Currently, Margaret is pursuing her Ph.D. in Law at the University of Washington as the 2020 cohort. She also joins the Native Education Certificate Program, University of Washington College of Education, as Cohort 4 in 2022-24. Her research interests are Taiwan Studies, Indigenous Education, and Curriculum Design. She is the recipient of the Scholarships for Indigenous People to Study Overseas from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. She is affiliated with the UW Taiwan Studies Program as a Ph.D. Student and the UCLan Centre of Austronesian Studies (COAST) as an Associate Research Fellow.

Margaret serves as the core staff in the UW Taiwanese Graduate Student and Professional Association (TGSA). She is in the Young Scholar Program of the North America Taiwanese Professors’ Association (NATPA) in 2022. She also participates in the International Pride—an organization at UW which fosters community for LGBTQIA+ international students.
